Google CEO Joins Twitter

At this point, Twitter may not gain much from the backing of any more “celebrity” members; we’ve already seen lots of politicians, media personalities, and Hollywood types join up.  Just the same, it seems noteworthy that Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, apparently established an account last night.

Let’s get the suspicious stuff out of the way first.  Schmidt’s supposed account – eschmidt0 – hasn’t yet been decorated with a Verified Accounts checkmark.  It lacks a profile picture, and is following Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Heidi Montag, the Dixie Chicks, and 50 Cent.

But the account’s following Barack Obama, Arianna Huffington, and Al Gore, too (Schmidt isn’t shy about his political affiliations), and several current and ex-Googlers have made contact with it.  The account’s tweets (two so far, read ’em below) are consistent with Schmidt’s personality and schedule, as well.

So Google’s CEO seems to have finally judged Twitter to be worth his time and energy.  This may sway a few people in the tech industry to follow his lead, at least, even if we’re past the point of new members being a big deal.

Don’t be surprised if another round of “Google’s going to buy Twitter” rumors also springs up.

UPDATE: Okay, some shuffling’s been done.  Eric Schmidt’s previous tweets, along with all his other details, have been transferred to a different account, and this new account (ericschmidt) has been verified.  A person calling himself Felipe has taken over the eschmidt0 account.
