Introduction
Dalaman Özel Ula is a private university located in the coastal town of Dalaman, in southwestern Turkey. Established in the early 2000s, the institution has grown into a multidisciplinary center of higher education, offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across the fields of engineering, social sciences, health sciences, and humanities. The university is named after its founding benefactor, Mr. Ula Korkmaz, whose philanthropic contributions facilitated the construction of the campus and the launch of the first academic cohort.
The university’s mission emphasizes the integration of academic excellence with practical application, community engagement, and international collaboration. Its strategic location near the Mediterranean Sea provides a unique setting for research in marine sciences, tourism management, and environmental studies.
History and Foundation
Early Vision and Planning
In 1998, a group of local educators, business leaders, and community activists identified a need for a comprehensive higher education institution in Dalaman, a region that had traditionally relied on agriculture, fishing, and seasonal tourism. The proposal was to create a university that would combine academic rigor with vocational training tailored to the region’s economic profile.
Initial feasibility studies were conducted by a consortium of Turkish universities and international consultants. The studies highlighted the potential for interdisciplinary programs, particularly in marine engineering, sustainable tourism, and regional development. The project was formally endorsed by the Ministry of National Education in 2000.
Foundation and Naming
On 15 March 2001, the foundation stone for Dalaman Özel Ula was laid. The institution was named in honor of Ula Korkmaz, a prominent local philanthropist and former mayor of Dalaman who had donated the initial endowment of 5 million Turkish lira. The naming was intended to symbolize the community’s commitment to the university’s long-term sustainability.
Early Years (2001–2010)
The first academic year, 2002–2003, began with an enrollment of 320 students across three departments: Marine Engineering, Tourism Management, and Business Administration. The university operated initially from temporary facilities, with classes held in leased municipal buildings and temporary lecture halls.
Construction of the main campus commenced in 2004, with the first phase of the campus, including the library and administrative buildings, completed in 2006. By 2008, a dedicated Faculty of Health Sciences was established, offering a Bachelor of Nursing program that attracted students from across the region.
Expansion and Modernization (2011–Present)
From 2011 onward, Dalaman Özel Ula undertook a strategic expansion plan that added five new faculties: Engineering and Technology, Social Sciences, Law, Architecture and Design, and Environmental Sciences. New graduate and doctoral programs were launched in 2015, reflecting the university’s growing research capacity.
In 2018, the university introduced a comprehensive digital learning platform to support blended learning and online courses. The platform has been widely adopted, particularly during the global pandemic of 2020–2021, when it facilitated continuity of education for over 80% of the student body.
In 2022, the university celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of academic conferences, cultural festivals, and community outreach programs that reinforced its commitment to regional development and academic excellence.
