Apple Nike+iPod Sports Kit: A Potential Tracking Tool?

The Unexpected Revelation

Researchers from the University of Washington have recently unveiled findings suggesting the Apple Nike+iPod Sports Kit may function as more than just an exercise tool. In a study led by T. Scott Saponas, evidence suggests this popular kit can also act as a tracking device.

How the Nike+iPod Sports Kit Works

For many fitness enthusiasts, the collaboration between Apple and Nike has been a game-changer. This innovative technology merges a chip into Nike running shoes. This chip measures calories burned, distance covered, and communicates this data directly to an iPod Nano.

The Apple’s Nike+iPod site offers insights into the various functionalities of this sports kit. Beyond tracking, the kit provides spoken feedback, plays motivational PowerSongs, and offers customizable workouts. Users can even upload their data to Nike+ online platform, scrutinizing their exercise routines, setting ambitious targets, or challenging friends to virtual races.

At the heart of this technology is data transmission. One chip embedded in the Nike shoe functions as a pedometer. This chip then communicates with another in the iPod Nano, recording and storing the user’s activity.

The Potential Risk

The study by Saponas and his team uncovered a rather unsettling aspect of this chip technology. The in-shoe sensor, while revolutionary in tracking exercise metrics, can also make the user susceptible to third-party tracking. This is due to the unique code emitted by the in-shoe sensor which not only identifies a specific runner but can also pinpoint their exact location.

The team’s revelation didn’t stop there. Saponas demonstrated the feasibility of real-time tracking of a runner using Google Maps, simply by intercepting the signal from this sensor. This is especially concerning if the sensor remains activated outside of exercise sessions.

Precautionary Measures for Users

For those who regularly use the Nike+iPod kit, this research underscores the importance of vigilance. A simple yet effective countermeasure is to ensure the Sports Kit is switched off post-exercise. This prevents any unintended transmission of data that could potentially reveal the user’s whereabouts.

While advancements in technology invariably bring conveniences and novel experiences, they sometimes come with unforeseen vulnerabilities. It’s crucial for both tech creators and users to be aware, continually reassessing the tools we integrate into our daily lives. And as for the Nike+iPod Sports Kit, the solution, for now, might be as straightforward as the flip of a switch.
