Gmail’s offline feature has officially graduated from Gmail Labs and is now a standard part of Google’s email service. Initially launched as a lab experiment nearly a year ago, it has now been deemed ready for mainstream use.
“By installing Offline Gmail, you can use the regular Gmail interface to read and write emails, search, and organize your inbox, even without an internet connection,” explains Gmail software engineer Aaron Whyte. “The Flaky Connection mode also speeds up Gmail when your connection is slow or unreliable.”
Whyte adds, “Since we first launched in Labs, we’ve received a lot of feedback from users who tried Offline Gmail, and your input has helped us make many improvements.”
Recently, Google introduced a couple of new features for offline Gmail. Users can now select which messages get downloaded for offline use, providing greater control and flexibility.
“Offline Gmail has been particularly beneficial for businesses and schools transitioning to Google Apps from traditional desktop mail clients. They are accustomed to accessing their mail whether or not they are online, and Offline Gmail brings this functionality directly to the browser,” says Whyte.
To utilize the offline feature in Gmail, simply enable it and adjust your offline settings from the “offline” tab in Gmail’s settings.
