Poll Shows Hollywood Strikes Reflect a Widespread Concern About AI

Hollywood’s actors and writers are currently on strike, partially due to concerns over artificial intelligence’s (AI) growing presence in the film industry. However, concerns about automation extend beyond the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown, according to recent polling by the Los Angeles Times.

The Poll Results: AI and Job Anxiety

Nearly half (45%) of Americans are apprehensive about AI’s effect on their employment, as per a poll conducted by Leger. The same poll revealed that only 29% are unconcerned, demonstrating a significant level of unease about the future of work.

Age Factor in AI Concerns

Interestingly, the anxiety over AI is consistent across partisan lines, but varies with age. Among 18- to 34-year-olds, the concern rises to 57%. In contrast, Americans aged 55 and older expressed less worry, suggesting a generational divide in attitudes towards AI.

AI in the Entertainment Industry

Artificial intelligence isn’t a mere hypothetical in the entertainment world—it’s already here and making waves. Unions representing actors and writers have made AI central to their bargaining demands, arguing for more job security and fairer pay.

Actors and writers are pushing for restrictions on machine-generated scripts and digital “cloning” technologies, and are garnering significant public sympathy. The same poll showed more public support for union members than for the studios and networks.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) acknowledges the complexities AI introduces, stating that AI-generated content is ineligible for writing credit. It calls for informed consent and fair compensation in cases of digital replication of actors.

AI: An Integral Part of Filmmaking

Hollywood studios and streaming companies have embraced AI technology, with AI-focused recruitment booming amid the dual strikes. AI has infiltrated every part of the filmmaking process, from dubbing to motion capture and script visualization.

Future of AI: Across Industries

The entertainment industry is a pioneer in AI adoption, but it likely won’t be the last. Other industries like law, retail, and journalism are looking towards an AI-driven future, a prospect that stirs both anticipation and concern among Americans.

Public Support for AI Regulation

Beyond Hollywood’s creative class’s labor actions, a broader demographic also supports another power lever—government regulation of AI. Of those polled, 55% backed government intervention, hinting at a shared sentiment across party lines.

Artificial intelligence has irrevocably infiltrated our lives. How we handle its impact on jobs, particularly in creative industries, is a question that needs collective attention.
