Harnessing AI’s Potential: A Delicate Balance for Global Peace and Security

Share

In a recent United Nations (UN) address, Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, the Acting Deputy Representative to the UN, highlighted the delicate balance needed to harness the promise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) while mitigating its potential risks.

AI’s Incredible Promise

In his speech, DeLaurentis lauded the undeniable potential of AI. He pointed out how automated systems are revolutionizing fields such as agriculture, meteorology, and healthcare. Efficient crop growth, accurate storm predictions, and early disease identification are but a few examples of AI’s transformative power. If properly harnessed, AI could fast-track our progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Mitigating AI’s Risks

Despite AI’s potential benefits, DeLaurentis also sounded a note of caution. The unchecked proliferation of AI technology could intensify global conflicts and human rights abuses. Misinformation spread, bias amplification, malicious cyber operations, and the exacerbation of inequality could all be unintended side effects of AI technology.

Finding the Balance with AI

The challenge, therefore, is to balance the potential benefits of AI while also addressing its inherent risks. DeLaurentis welcomed discussions in this regard and cited the UN Security Council’s experience in addressing dual-use capabilities and integrating transformative technologies for international peace and security.

The US is committed to ensuring AI systems are safe and trustworthy. This includes adopting a comprehensive AI Risk Management Framework and working towards an AI Bill of Rights that ensures equal rights, opportunities, and access to critical resources or services.

AI in Military Use

DeLaurentis also discussed the military use of AI, arguing that it should be ethical, responsible, and enhance international security. He mentioned the US’s proposed Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of AI and Autonomy, which elaborates on principles for the development and use of AI in the military domain in compliance with international law.

Ensuring Responsible AI Use for Global Good

In conclusion, DeLaurentis highlighted the shared responsibility of all Member States in ensuring AI technologies serve the global public good. The goal should be to utilize AI not as a weapon of oppression but as a tool to enhance human dignity and aid us in achieving a more secure and peaceful world.
