Harnessing AI: A Game Changer in Law Enforcement

AI helped U.S. law enforcement nabbed a drug trafficker in New York, by monitoring suspicious driving behaviors and tracking license plates.

AI Used In Traffic Stops

Forbes reported that AI software scanned 1.6 billion license plate records, collected by ANPR cameras in the state. Developed by Rekor, this tool detects unusual driving patterns, aiding law enforcement. As a result, the drug trafficker got caught because the AI spotted his vehicle frequently traveling along known drug trafficking routes, making several brief stops.

Spreading the AI Technology To Police

Rekor’s ANPR software reached 23 U.S. police departments. Moreover, Drive reported its sale in Australia. However, Australian law enforcement hasn’t commented on AI’s use in spotting criminal driving patterns.

Proven Benefits of ANPR Cameras

ANPR cameras have been crucial for over a decade in law enforcement, especially in areas like Victoria and New South Wales. They identify major crime suspects, unlicensed drivers, unregistered cars, and wanted individuals. Remarkably, Victoria law enforcement uses Motorola’s ANPR system, scanning up to 76 million vehicles each year, demonstrating its impressive power and efficiency.

Other Potential Applications

AI software will supplement ANPR networks in populated areas of Australia, helping law enforcement identify repeat arsonists, predators, and serious criminals. Furthermore, it aids in investigating traffic offenses. Moreover, ANPR technology is used by road toll management companies, traffic networks, and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

AI Policing Privacy Concerns

Despite such an extensive surveillance system, privacy advocates remain concerned about its potential misuse. The Australian Privacy Foundation, in particular, highlights the risk of errors leading to ‘false positives,’ which could result in innocent people being falsely accused of offenses they did not commit by law enforcement.

Future Applications and Concerns

Australia hasn’t reported any misconduct, but New Zealand audited 350,000 ANPR reviews and found five staff under investigation for possible misuse. Additionally, the Australian Privacy Foundation stresses transparency in ANPR projects. Looking forward, it’s increasingly likely that Australian law enforcement will employ AI alongside ANPR due to tech potential and resource constraints.
