While a lot of the talk around Twitter is hype and hyperbole and anything else that is based in theory there are some real numbers that Twitter can point to that are hard to ignore. In June, according to comScore as reported by TechCrunch Twitter had 44.5 million visitors to the site. This is a pretty large number on its own, placing it ahead of ESPN and just shy of Craig’s List as well as the BBC’s site.

Twitter has changed the word "updates" to "tweets" on user profiles. Though the change seems insignificant, it's the first time the famed microblogging site has used the term "tweet" on their site.

HubSpot is the latest organization to release a study on Twitter usage, and shockingly manages to give us some insight that we have not really seen yet this week.

Yahoo has introduced their own version of Twitter. For now, at least, you can only use it in Portuguese. It’s called Meme—borrowed from a word coined by Richard Dawkins (he used the word to describe a human gene that causes selfishness).

Poker superstar Phil (Poker Brat) Hellmuth, who first started twittering December 18th last year has taken to Twitter like it's his personal diary. Hellmuth is using Twitter as a live outlet to express his frustrations after a losing hand during online poker play so the rail birds at UltimateBet can experience the full flavor of a Hellmuth outburst, just like on ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Poker. I’m in an awards mood today, and it’s almost time to reflect on 2008 as we head barreling into 2009. The New York Times blogged about a company’s quest (great PR move by Sawhorse Media)  to find the best tweeters of the year. The awards are called the Shorty Awards, and it’s a hot topic on Twitter. Over 12,000 entries have come in already.
