The Adobe Media Player debuted this week, and after learning a little more at the launch party and trying it out myself, I'll share a few thoughts on it. You can also find a screencast I created with the visuals (no voiceover); next time I'll resize it and embed it, but it's my first screencast, so I appreciate your patience.

In keeping with the “open media” vision described by Yahoo Music exec Ian Rogers in his latest call to arms (which I wrote about yesterday), Yahoo launched a second iteration of its browser-based music player — this one allowing anyone to add a line of Javascript and have a Yahoo-branded player pop up wherever there’s an mp3 link.

Adobe today announced the immediate availability of Flash Player 9 Update 3(version number 9.0.115.0), previously code named Moviestar.

If the user interface ain’t broken, don’t fix it... but fixing, Google did, and recently released a new YouTube player that is breaking some of the “learned” interface. Below you can see an example of a new style YouTube player:

When portable media player owners choose which videos to buy they want compelling video content that will look good on their small screens, according to Parks Associates, "Portable Multimedia Players: Analysis and Forecasts" report.

Google makes rare books available for free, protects the environment, and gives grants to many non-profit organizations.  But in at least one respect, the company may not be so generous; General Public License (GPL) author Eben Moglen feels Google should contribute more to the open source community.

Traditionally, these have been the barriers to media entrance: cost, content, audience. Broadband has weakened those barriers in terms of cost and audience, but content, as always, drives the final bargain. But when under-the-radar Mochila officially launches its AdMatch Player next week at Ad:Tech, the final barrier is effectively breached.    

Since digital media creators widely use Adobe tools to create and to distribute content, the company saw the opportunity to add playback and measurement to that ecosystem with Adobe's just-announced Media Player.
