For the last 10 years the question of whether to use fixed or liquid layouts when designing a website has raged on in the web design world, with major design players on both sides of the proverbial fence. Recently though, as screen resolutions have increased dramatically, fixed layouts have all but replaced liquid, but there are still come major advantages to a liquid layout if designed properly. Although CSS layouts have been around for years, they haven't become so commonplace until recently.

Having been asked by several readers, I have decided to create this easy to understand tutorial on creating web pages with CSS. I will not be able to expose to you everything there is about CSS in this tutorial, but I will be able to give you enough to create a nice looking page. After completing this tutorial you should have enough to explore CSS and web page design even further.

Frames Vs Tables Some people like to use frames on their sites. I would recommend you avoid them if you can ... and you probably can.

There is one common mistake that Web Site Developers often make when designing web sites, and that is the lack of consideration to different monitor sizes in relation to the layout of pages. A large number of Web Page Designers still can't see past the old favourite 14" or 15" monitor. Indeed more people (even though they are using smaller Palm Pilots and Internet connected phones etc.) still use a larger monitor as their main computer interface. Less people than ever before use a 14" or 15" screen with a screen resolution of the old favourite 800 x 600 pixels, yet we still get messages on Web Sites like "Best viewed at 800 x 600 screen resolution". Most people even those still using 14" or 15" monitors are investing in display drivers that offer increased resolution and refresh rates.
