There's a dearth of interesting bits in the world of search this week, probably since it's between SES San Jose and the last big holiday weekend of the summer.

First off, my title may have unintentionally tricked you; this article revolves around what the Brits call “football,” but what we Americans identify as “soccer.”  Sorry, NFL fans.  But followers of the English Premier League have come to the right place, and it’s actually their search activity that has caused all the buzz.

Football fanatics rejoice! AOL announced an online video contest, dubbed America Loves Football, that gives fans a chance to submit videos to win big prizes.

Just in time for the flurry of 2006 kickoffs, AOL launched FanHouse, a football blogging community, with 75 blogs dedicated to NFL and NCAA teams.

The great NFL football coach Bum Phillips allegedly said of legendary Miami Dolphins Head Coach Don Shula (pictured below) that, "He could take his'n and beat your'n; or take your'n and beat his'n."

Not the England loses to Northern Ireland 1-0 in World Cup qualifying' football, either, but the gridiron version.

Hear that sound? The sound of pads hitting together signifying It's almost time for the gridiron giants to resume their modern day re-enactment of the gladiator competitions from so long ago? Yes folks, it's almost time for football season to start.
