Zazzle Turns To API For Dazzle

The Create-A-Product API will be available to site publishers as part of Zazzle’s effort to enable product creation and monetization through affiliate websites.

Customized products website Zazzle announced its new program called the Product Engine today.

The program opens Zazzle’s technology and customization tools to third party websites.

The program also offers a monetization opportunity. Zazzle will pay a referral fee for sales generated through the platform.

Zazzle said this would be a one-click method of turning photos, designs, artwork, or text into physical merchandise.

“As part of the Web 2.0 ecosystem, we felt the time was right to let consumers mash up content from anywhere onto t-shirts, postage, cards, mugs and posters,” said Tuoc Luong, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Engineering at Zazzle.

The API works as a simple URL linkover-based process.

Webmasters use special links to specify the source of their images and text for purposes of using them with Zazzle. Visitors can then customize the product using that digital content with fonts and colors as desired.

Those who use the Zazzle program to enable digital content for physical purchase by others can earn a royalty on each item bought by others, along with a referral fee. Zazzle said that would be a 10 percent royalty plus a 7 percent referral, based on Zazzle’s net revenue.

Affiliates would need to sign up for a Zazzle account first. Then they can create and customize product templates, and build the special links for their websites.

Zazzle’s program allows affiliates to view information like linkovers, purchases, and total earnings through the program.
