Yearly Check-Up

Remember last year, the message that we could not escape?

Think for a moment.

Every newspaper, every news program, magazines of all sorts were carrying stories about it.

Y2K. Would we survive the blitz of computer errors that could shut down the world as we know it? Would terrorists take over the world because of the massive confusion during the transition to a year not starting with 19? Would there be monumental looting? Power outages? The end of modern civilization?

We watched our television screens as the world slowly changed to the year 2000. Time zone by time zone, life continued with smooth efficiency.

What have you observed about your life during the past year? How has your life continued with smooth efficiency? Where are you today vis a vis where you thought you would be last year at this time?

One of the reasons there was not cataclysmic computer failure on January 1, 2000, was because of a wide scale effort to prevent mishaps through careful and continuous planning. Another reason was widespread cooperation between agencies, corporations, individuals and governments. Finally, any necessary construction of programs or contingency plans were put into effect without undue fear or hysteria. People simply investigated what needed to be completed, went about the business of completing those projects and followed up as was necessary. They recognized the belief that planning without action is futile, and action without planning is fatal.

In your self assessment, how are you carefully and continuously planning your life, your business, your projects? How are you adjusting or tweaking as changes or needs arise? Do you see any areas where working cooperatively with another party would make a positive difference? How could your participation with someone else serve the wider community? Finally, what have you constructed or put into place to support your business and your life? What contingency plans are needed? What else needs to be adjusted or reformatted to make everything work smoothly?

W. Clement Stone said “If you employed study, thinking, and planning time daily, you could develop and use the power that can change the course of your destiny.” Without judging yourself for your performance so far this year, take a few days to be completely honest with yourself in regards to where you are now, where you had hoped to be, and where you want to be next month and next year. Taking the time to carefully plan, continuously adjust, cooperate with others, construct programs while expecting and embracing the possibility of contingency programs will make you and your business stronger. As Mr. Stone said, you will change the course of your destiny. It will allow your destiny to be that which you want it to be instead of that which happens to you.
