Yahoo Research is preparing to establish a research lab in Bangalore; it is also going to begin a string of lectures in India called the “Big Thinker Series.” And while that rather silly name may not demand respect, the series should focus on serious and relevant issues within the fields of “science, technology, and the internet.”
More specifically, subjects at the quarterly lectures will include “community systems: the world online,” “web search and online communities,” “pricing,” and “web mining or the wisdom of the crowds,” according to an article from the Indian Express Group.
The same article quoted Prabhakar Raghavan, the head of Yahoo Research. “The lectures will target academia, scientists, the corporate world and the media,” he said at a press conference. The lectures will also take place with the understanding that “search would go beyond typing two key words.” (An assurance from the head of Yahoo Research that “Yahoo is working on a pipeline of innovations” followed.)
Raghavan also spoke on the subject of the new research center (or “centre,” depending on your location). He told the Business Standard that “we have initiated the process of setting up our lab in Bangalore and have started hiring scientists for this unit. There is no time-frame when this centre will start its operations as it depends on the caliber of people we hire and when the centre will be acquire a critical mass of people.”
The new research center will be created in addition to an existing “research & development centre in Bangalore with around 700 personnel.” Yahoo Research is evidently very serious about establishing a significant presence in India.
