Yahoo Powered Ujiko Search Engine Launches

Packed with features not regularly found in other search engines, Ujiko.com has launched a Yahoo-powered search engine. Part of the Kartoo metasearch network, Ujiko boasts a crawled database of over 4 billion pages.

The first feature that stands out is the fact that the search results page is done in Flash. This makes it one of the first search engines to integrate Flash into its dynamic page design. The index page is done in regular HTML, with a simple, Google-style interface.

The major innovations of Ujiko come through on the search results page. Besides being presented in Flash, Ujiko results features a favorites button that is shaped like a heart, and a trash button. These options give users the ability to customize their searches.

The favorites button adds a result to a list that Ujiko stores. Ujiko’s about page gives a better description: “When you move the pointer over a site description, a heart-shaped button appears on the right-hand side. It enables you to open the site form where you will grade the site. The more hearts, the better position in the results.” The heart button also allows users to add comments, change the URL, as well as the page title.

The trash button does just that. It acts as a filter for sites that users may not want to view. This applies to parents looking to protect children and to users who have come across malicious sites.

According to ResourceShelf, Ujiko stores filters and preferences on the user’s computer. The search results feature paid listings provided by Overture. Ujiko also features French and United Kingdom versions of its search engine.
