Yahoo Europe Chief Goes to blinkx

blinkx has appointed former Yahoo Europe Chief, Mark Opzoomer, as Chief Executive Officer.

Effective immediately, Opzoomer will guide and expand blinkx worldwide operations, including business development, marketing, and global operations.

“blinkx technology will fundamentally change the way people find and use information — on the Internet and on their own computers,” said Opzoomer. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and I’m excited to lead blinkx into its next phase. I look forward to working with the management team to create new commercial opportunities for the company.”

blinkx’s innovative search technology redefines traditional search technology by understanding and linking to relevant information anywhere and in any format. blinkx automatically links information from computer files and can suggest content from news sites, the internet, video, and blogs.

In announcing Opzoomer’s appointment, blinkx co-founder Suranga Chandratillake said, “Mark embodies all of the characteristics necessary to drive the expansion of blinkx. His experience within the search industry is unparalleled, and his combination of strategic abilities and operational excellence make him the perfect person to lead our management team.”

Mark Opzoomer has more than twenty years experience in business and finance. From July 2001 until December 2003, he served as European managing director & regional vice-president of Yahoo!. Prior to joining Yahoo!, Opzoomer was deputy chief executive of Hodder Headline PLC, a London Stock Exchange-listed international publishing company. Opzoomer has also served in various positions within Virgin Group, under Richard Branson. In 1991, Virgin Mastertronic Group was sold to Sega Enterprises, where he was Commercial and Finance Director until 1994. Mark holds an MBA from IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland, and was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce, Honors, from Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada. Mark Opzoomer also completed the London and Wharton Business Schools Directors Forum, a program for public company directors. In 1981, Mark Opzoomer qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse Coopers.
