Xplore’s “Rugged” Tablet PC

Xplore Technologies, which offers “Rugged Mobile Computers for Real World Environments,” is in the process of introducing a new product.

Dubbed the iX104C3, it is being marketed as “the essential rugged mobile computer designed to satisfy customer requirements.”

Xplore appears to be stuck on the word “rugged,” so prepare yourself. The company “has remained true to its original mission: to be an innovative provider of rugged mobile computing systems.”

The results of this effort have produced “what customers are calling a best-in-class’ rugged computing family,” according to the Xplore site.

The site also provides some information more specific to the iX104C3.

It is “powerful” and “secure,” with a “durable fingerprint reader for Windows security authentication.” Xplore also claims the Tablet PC is “versatile,” “viewable,” “easy to use,” and “mobile.”

The page pays extra attention to the iX104C3’s sturdiness. It “incorporates a triple-layer Magnesium housing with a bumper system and customized gaskets.”

This “enables it to survive in demanding work environments including exposure to vibration, extreme temperatures, moisture, dust, or drops on concrete.”

It’s not indestructible, but it seems owners are unlikely to encounter any problems unless they throw it in with the laundry or douse it with liquids from the garage.

Under the header “contamination by fluids,” you see, is the list “detergents, brake fluid, aromatic hydrocarbons.” This is not exactly the sort of stuff to which Tablet PCs are usually exposed.

The company doesn’t appear to have released any information regarding pricing, but Xplore asserts that the iX104C3 will have a “low cost of ownership.”

Availability is also a mystery. One thing appears to be certain – this will be “a truly rugged mobile computer.”
