Microsoft has released a new desktop-based blogging client called Windows Live Writer, and reports and reviews of it are flooding in. The general consensus is a positive one, although there are a few nits to pick.
Paul Kedrosky was among those who found fault with Live Writer. “Pleasant to look at, but seemingly designed by people who have only seen photographs of real bloggers,” he wrote. Among the issues he pointed out: “On setup it refused to auto-recognize my blog at its actual address . . . . The Web’ layout in the app is nonsensical . . . . It doesn’t auto-load your most recently posted stories.”
Paul Stamatiou had a different opinion. “For an application that came out of no-where and accomplishes so much, I have to hand it to Microsoft,” he wrote. “Windows Live Writer has the features and capabilities of a program you would expect to see bundled in the next version of MS Office. I really think other companies can learn from this product – and they need to . . . . With the optional toolbar for Internet Explorer, Writer really creates a well-rounded blogging experience.”
Nathan Weinberg also thought well of Live Writer. He mentioned its “unbelievable image formatting options,” and called the Web Layout view “the most visually pleasing way to edit a blog I have ever seen.” Before concluding the post, Weinberg took a moment to mention something on his mind.
“This wasn’t supposed to go public till tomorrow night,” he wrote on Sunday, “but the Inside Live blog broke embargo, screwing up all of us who were trying to prepare our coverage. And yes, you deserve to be called out when you break embargo . . . .”
