What’s the Big Idea?

Can’t move any products? Maybe the problem is you don’t have a BIG IDEA. What’s a BIG IDEA? A BIG IDEA is the thought, phrase and/or concept that makes your offer both UNIQUE and APPEALING.

I recently saw two ebooks. One contained everything a very successful online professional knows about making money online–over 300 pages. The other was a quickly thrown together 90 pages of generally known concepts readily available for free online.

The first one sold for $50, the second for $197.

The second one sold almost 1,000 copies in six months, while the higher-value book sold only 450.

Since they were both ebooks, the production cost was almost zero for both books. The gross profit on the second book was $174,500 more than the first.

The only real difference was the BIG IDEA behind the books.

Several years ago, Robert Allen wanted to generate sales for his real estate books and seminars. He came up with a BIG IDEA.

He put together a challenge and used press releases to let the world know about it. Here’s the gist of what he said:

“Real Estate Guru Makes Challenge: ‘Put me in any big city in the US, let me pick someone out of an unemployment line and within 90 days they will have made $5,000 buying real estate with no money down.'”

Then, he did it. He picked three people out of an unemployment line and attempted to help them make $5,000 in the next 90 days investing in real estate.

The buzz he created with that promotion made him hundreds of thousands in profits.

Have you heard of Tova Borgnine? She is the creator of “Beauty by Tova”, a company that pulls in millions in sales each year.

Back before QVC, before her cosmetics empire, she was just struggling to keep her business going. That’s when she employed the “BIG IDEA”.

She came out with a new perfume and decided to launch it with a full-page ad in the LA Times. The headline said something like this:

“Perfume Creator Claims there is No Illegal Sexual Stimulant in New Formula”

Within a few months she was making tens of thousands in sales.

One more example–from just last week!

A friend of mine put together a BIG IDEA that catapulted his traffic and sales by 1000% in just a few days. His Alexa ranking went from 75,000 or so to 4,500 in less than a week.

You can take a look at this BIG IDEA here:

Let me give you the ELEMENTS of a BIG IDEA:

1. A BIG IDEA must be SHOCKING or ASTOUNDING

It has to get people’s attention. Marlon Sanders–who I think might be half-crazy anyway–recently offered to ‘Kiss an Elephant’s Butt’. That catches people’s attention.

2. A BIG IDEA must GENERATE POSITIVE INTEREST

Some things shock but fail to generate positive interest in your product or service. Just shock value doesn’t always work.

Make sure your BIG IDEA hits on a major psychological/ emotional trigger for your prospective audience. Solve a problem for them.

3. A BIG IDEA must DELIVER ON ITS PROMISES

I recently started offering a new report on developing a passive income in 60 days. I just began offering it on May 23. Yesterday I found out about one person who is ALREADY earning money from it (less than 3 weeks after purchasing).

That’s delivering.

If you say: “I am going to show you how to…” then your product needs to deliver. Or you might have to kiss an elephant’s butt.

4. A BIG IDEA must GET THE SALE

One problem with some big ideas is they lead to curiosity but not to sales. You have to track each big idea to make sure that it generates more than just visits to your site, that it also generates sales. Traffic is never your end goal–making a profit is.

5. A BIG IDEA is not a PRODUCT, IT’S A PACKAGE

People are not buying a mop, they are buying a Floor Maintenance System, complete with a one year supply of replacement filters and, as a bonus, the “Clean House in Minutes” video. Who wouldn’t want that?

Create a package in keeping with your BIG IDEA. Put it together as one consistent piece–your bonuses complement and complete the original product.

And, here is the key to real wealth…

6. The BIG IDEA brings people into the path for FUTURE PRODUCTS

Billy Mays is great at this: He started out with OxyClean, then expanded to offer more and more cleaning products to his customers again and again.

Having trouble making sales? Maybe the problem is you are just selling “another ebook”. Instead, why not try to come up with a whole package based on a BIG IDEA. Take the product you are already offering and come up with a BIG IDEA that will put it in front of more and more eager buyers.
