Arguably the founder of the Internet, the esteemed Mr. Cerf has joined Google and will have the title of Chief Internet Evangelist.’
Google’s latest press release announces the addition of Vint Cerf to the Googleplex. Mr. Cerf helped created TCP/IP, the protocols that permit the flow of information from point to point on the Internet.
“Vint Cerf is clearly one of the great technology leaders of our time,” said Google CEO Eric Schmidt in the release. “His vision for technology helped create entire industries that have transformed many parts of our lives. We are honored to welcome him to Google.”
Mr. Cerf departs MCI, where he worked on advancing technology. His work there helped MCI become an Internet player. He also works with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab on a truly out-of-this-world project. The Interplanetary Network would extend the Internet to the solar system for planet-to-planet communications.
For people who enjoy the latest Google conspiracy theory, here are Mr. Cerf’s comments from the press release to consider:
“Google has already made tremendous strides in making access to information on the web a reality for users across the globe, but we’re still in the Internet’s early innings,” he said. “This medium will enjoy wider-spread use than television, radio or phones, and will ultimately expand beyond planet Earth. Google has always believed in doing things differently, and I believe that places us in a unique position to help bring even the wildest Internet visions into reality.”
