Jabber, Inc. has launched an updated version of its Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) in the form of a 5.1 release. Features have been added and compatibility has been improved from the last generation of the software.
A Jabber press release notes the product’s “standard enterprise and carrier-grade instant messaging (IM), multi-user chat, and highly programmable presence platform,” and then goes on to list the new additions. Those include:
— A new Java-script client that leverages HTTP Binding, Jabber Messenger for the Web 5.0. (Details of Jabber Messenger for the Web 5.0 will be made available on July 26).
— Out-of-the-box integration with Adobe’s Macromedia(R) Breeze(R) software. Breeze customers can initiate part or all of the collaboration suite’s rich functionality from within Jabber XCP chat sessions or contact lists.
— Certificate-based authentication using x.509 certificates.
— Support for Oracle 10G, DB2 8, and PostgreSQL 8 databases.
— Support for HTTP Binding, a more responsive and reliable method of communicating with zero-footprint (Web/browser-based) Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) clients than HTTP Polling.
— Dynamic registration of new EventBroker components. These software agents, which apply business logic to the ordinary flow of messages, no longer require administrator intervention to ensure each new component is configured properly.
The press release also relays a message from Dave Uhlir, Jabber’s vice president of marketing. “EventBroker components are persistent software agents that filter IM and other Extensible Markup Language (XML) traffic for rogue content and scan message streams to insert additional context,” Uhlir said. “For example, in call centers, EventBroker agents filter customer queries to notify support reps of known solutions to live issues, or alert supervisors to escalating problems.”
Uhlir had more to say on the subject of HTTP Binding. “The ability to support scalable and feature-rich zero-footprint clients and presence-enabled Web portals is of considerable interest amongst our government customers as well as among many service providers who have indicated that what we have achieved is a significant and not easily replicated industry breakthrough.”
Jabber has made a “demonstration of the integrated Jabber XCP and Breeze product” available here.
