Twitter is the Fastest Growing Community

Nielsen online is sharing some interesting data about Twitter. For one, it was the fastest growing community destination last month, experiencing 1382% growth from last year. Trailing behind it were Zimbio, Facebook, Multiply, and Wikia.

Twitter Growth

“Twitterers (a.k.a. Tweeters) are not primarily teens or college students as you might expect,” says Nielsen’s Michelle McGiboney. “In fact, in February the largest age group on Twitter was 35-49; with nearly 3 million unique visitors, comprising almost 42 percent of the site’s audience. We found that the majority of people visit Twitter.com while at work, with 62 percent of the combo unique audience accessing the site from work only versus 35 percent that accessed it from home only.”

Twitter Growth

When Twitter first emerged there were a lot of skeptics who did not see the point of such a service. That hasn’t entirely changed, but more and more people are continuing to find ways that Twitter can be useful to them, and not just as a way to say random things.

Murdok looks at a variety of uses people are finding from the service. I have also recently discussed specific examples of how local businesses and larger brands are using Twitter to their respective advantages.

It also helps that Facebook has apps that let you post to Twitter from there, and Facebook’s popularity continues to skyrocket as well. The growth will surely plateau sooner or later, but things are looking good for Twitter at the moment.
