Computer security company, Trend Micro announced a glitch in their new Official Pattern Release (OPR) 2.594.00 available as a download over the weekend of April 22nd.
The glitch caused a number of computers to lock up due to overutilization of the CPU. The systems affected were OfficeScan , PC-cillin, ServerProtect for NT, Client/Server Suite 2.0 for SMB and Client/Server/Messaging Suite 2.0 for SMB.
To protect its customers against the growing threat of the WORM_RBOT family, Trend Micro enhanced the decompression ability of its Pattern File by supporting 3 new heuristic patterns, including UltraProtect decompression, in OPR 2.594.00.
Due to an isolated anomaly in the engineering, development and pattern release process, the UltraProtect decompression may, in certain circumstances, cause some systems to experience high CPU power consumption. This can lead to system instability when this specific file type is scanned using Pattern File 2.594.00.
OPR 2.594.00 has been found to cause performance issues (e.g., 100% CPU utilization) on systems with the following components:
Trend Micro Scan Engine 7.500 or higher
Any of the following Trend Micro products and Microsoft Windows operating systems service packs:
OfficeScan 5.58 client and above (up to 7.0) on Windows XP SP2
OfficeScan 6.5 client and above (up to 7.0) on Windows 2003 SP1
ServerProtect for NT 5.58 Normal Server on Windows 2000 SP4
ServerProtect for NT 5.58 Normal Server on Windows 2003 SP1
PC-cillin (VirusBuster) 2002 (PCC 9) on Windows ME and Windows XP SP2
PC-cillin (VirusBuster) 2003 (PCC 10) on Windows ME and Windows XP SP2
PC-cillin Internet Security (VirusBuster) 2004 (PCC 11) on Windows ME and Windows XP SP2
PC-cillin Internet Security (VirusBuster) 2005 on Windows XP SP2
Fortunately, Trend Micro already has the solution out there. You can download the fix for t he program from Trend Micro’s website.
