The Crystal Ball

Imagine you had a crystal ball back in January of 2003 and could look and see yourself today. Is this where you expected to be? Is this where you HOPED to be?

Here are some keys to achieving this year what you may not have achieved last:

1. Develop Relationships with People More Successful than You.

If you want to become more successful, find people who have already achieved a greater level of success and get to know them. I can’t overemphasize the powerful impact just one person can have on your success. A person who has already succeeded can help answer your questions, guide your path and generally keep you from making mistakes.

There are a few ways to get an ongoing relationship with someone who is already successful. First, you can simply email them and ask for help with something. While I would encourage you to become one of their customers first, you can often get a personal response.

Another way to get this done is to take a personal mentoring course. While these may seem pricey, they can often catapult you to a level of success far exceeding the cost. I have a list of mentoring opportunities from a number of people here:

2. Focus on generating new leads.

Marketing is truly about getting more and more people into your “lead box.” On a practical level that means collecting contact information (most often names and email addresses) for as many people as possible in your target market.

Think of your leads like the gas going to a car. Stop giving your car gas and it will still glide along for a while, but it will begin to slow and eventually stop.

How can you get more people into your own lead box? I put together a resource here:

3. Nurture and Protect Your Reputation.

In the long run your success or failure online will correspond to the reputation you build on the net. Some basics are obvious: answer emails and phone calls quickly, handle complaints and refunds immediately, run your business like a business–no matter how small.

But there are some other things you need to consider you may not have thought of: Add quality, targeted content to your site. People want solid content and it builds your reputation.

Another way to build credibility is to NOT recommend every product. Be choosy and make sure you only promote products that will produce for your readers. Start publishing your newsletter in HTML, not just text. Pay for a new, professional, logo. All of these will help establish your reputation in your target market.

Follow these three recommendations and you are likely to see 2004 as your most successful years so far.
