Ever wonder how the “Big Bang” theory worked? Watch the blogosphere and you might be close. Technorati published their new state of the blogosphere numbers and it looks like blogs grow at about the same rate as the universe.
Ok, maybe an exaggeration but not by much. Technorati said they were tracking 19.6 million blogs with the total number of blogs doubling about every 5 months. To put this in perspective, this means there will be about 40 million blogs by Valentine’s Day. Based on that model, by 2009 there will be a blog for pretty much everyone on the planet, coming in at over 5 billion blogs. That’s a lot of spam.
Some other numbers mentioned that over 70,000 blogs were created daily and a new blog is created every second. They said recent spikes in blog creation comes from China. Also, 55% of new bloggers are still posting 3 months later and 13% of all blogs update weekly. Finally, between 2% and 8% of new blogs are spam.
They noted blogging posts have been climbing substantially too. There are about 1.2 million legitimate blog posts a day with about 33,000 posts an hour. Technorati said about 5.8 if entries were spam posts or fake.
Some of the recent news accounted for topics including the London subway bombings, Supreme Court nominations, Hurricane Katrina and others.
A number of individuals pointed out Technorati may be a little short on these numbers and their estimates on total numbers are larger than Technorati accounted for. Technorati chief David Sifry argued that while their service could be better and will get better, there’s certain room for improvement. He quickly pointed these numbers give people some idea of what there are dealing with in terms of scale and the numbers of blogs.
Blog number are growing at phenomenal rate, no question about it. The metrics also show some great potential for some of blogs that are good, to do well. Finally, it shows that many people in throughout the world want and need a voice to the rest of the world. Blogs are it.
