Just like any business, automation is the key and the right product is the means. I’ve been running my own businesses for 10 years now and believe me when I say that you must plan first. Your plan doesn’t have to be elaborate but should consist of what, where, when and how. Yes, it will seem like a waste of time but If you start out on the right road you journey will be so much more pleasant.
My past experience consisted of operating a business that required employees, supplies and large overhead. I can’t begin to tell you the grief that has come from these. Employees were never on time and earned more money then I did. My supplies, on the other hand, were perishable and yes a lot of it perished. The overhead for lights and equipment rental took whatever was left. After four years of failure, I began to research what business I could run without having employees, stock and overhead. This led me to think about the internet and what the internet could provide. How could I sell a product to the biggest customer base in the world and what would I sell them. After careful examination, I realized that there was no sense on recreating the wheel. Why not look at who was making money and then figure out how they were doing it. Through my research, I found many people making money selling information products online. Why, because they were cheap to produce and easy to get to the market. Well, if they could do it, I can do it.
I began by thinking about starting with the end in mind. What did I want to have happen:
- What do I want my business to do for me?
- How much money do you want to make?
- What vehicle will provide that amount of money?
- What do consumers want? (key ingredient)
- How do I provide the product?
My answer to all of these questions always pointed into the same direction, Information Products delivered over the internet. There are just so many advantages to selling information that make it the perfect business:
No Real Competition
Think about this — once you create your information product you own the copyright on it. A copyright means that nobody can come along and rip off your material. It’s not like a physical product where someone can knock you off. And, with Viral Marketing you products can deliver sales even to customers you don’t have direct contact with.
Yes, you can operate from anywhere. This is one of the best parts about doing business online. I’m working on trying to have a mountain home and a beach house. It really doesn’t matter where you want to live. If you have a computer hook-up you can literally be anywhere doing business and making money. The freedom the Internet brings by allow information products to be sold is incredible. What else could you do to gain so much freedom and still reach so many customers.
Big Margins
Well, delivering content over the Internet, which means people are not paying for the paper – they’re paying for the information – provides huge margins. Think about it! There is no production cost, just your time to develop the product. So what’s the margin? Very close to 100%. Pretty high, right? It’s awesome! Plus, you don’t really have to worry about competition getting into a price war with you like on the retail side.
Huge World Market
Today, with the Internet, the world is our oyster. And, more than ever, with the invention of the World Wide Web, people from all over the world are seeking your unique information. Sales are being to people all over the world. Plus, with a digital product it doesn’t cost you any more to deliver your product to someone who orders from England or someone who lives right next door.
Think about your goals first and decide how you want your business to run. Then follow your plan and you are on your way to success. As for myself, I found that my goals and desires were best met through selling information products online.
