Sony Plans New Online Service In 2010

Sony has plans to launch a new online service next year that will allow users to download music and movies to their televisions.

“I’d like it to get off the ground as quickly as possible,” said Kazuo Hirai, executive vice president of Sony and head of its Networked Products & Service Group, in an interview at the company’s Tokyo headquarters. “Earlier in the year is more preferable.”

The service for now is named Sony Online Service and will include more offerings than the existing PlayStation Network, which currently has 33 million register users and allows console owners to download games and connect with other gamers.

“One of the things we really need to get into is the whole concept of user-driven content,” said Hirai. “There already are a lot of services out there but we want to try to bring something that is uniquely Sony to the experience.”

Hirai said Sony Online Service will increase the value of its hardware, while also raising its brand awareness.

forecasts sales from the new service will generate Y300 billion by 2013, but the company will also provide a variety of free content to users.

“The first priority is for us to make sure the Sony Online Service is a point of differentiation for all Sony devices,” said Hirai.
