Sony added two new DVD burners to its offering in the 800 series. The internal DRU-800A and the external DRX-800UL burners support 4X DVD R Dual Layering technology and can burn roughly 8.5 gigs of video, audio or data onto a single DVD-R-UL. This will get you 4 hours of video.
“Our double layer drives have been very popular with consumers, commanding number one market share at retail, and now we’re taking the next step by providing dual layer recording, allowing users to choose from the widest possible selection of blank discs,” said Robert DeMoulin, marketing manager for branded storage products in Sony Electronics’ IT Products Division. “Sony’s 800 series of DVD burners is a superior option for consumers wanting to store and share home movies, digital photos, and music; businesses deploying DVD video-based training and sharing large files; and filmmakers creating prototypes on DVD videodisc before proceeding with mass replication.”
The internal DRU-800A drive comes with an ATAPI interface for easy installation inside a PC and includes a black replacement bezel for those with black-colored PC cases. The external DRX-800UL drive features a radical, space-efficient vertical design and offers connectivity with both IEEE 1394 and hi-speed USB digital interfaces for simple set-up and maximum flexibility.
Sony includes a Nero software package for burning video, audio, photos and a variety of other capacities including the Nero toolkit for preventive maintenance. Sony also provides phone support and a one year limited warranty for the product.
The price on these drives is pretty reasonable at $130 for the internal drive and it’s shipping now and $210 for the external and ships at the end of the month.
