Skype Consolidation

Skype went through another “reorganization” this week, and some people are starting to get nervous. The company, which was acquired by eBay in September of 2005, has lost (or gotten rid of) a number of employees recently, and because of this latest restructuring, there are “14 who are leaving or who have yet to find another job at Skype or another eBay company.”

Phil Wolff relayed that statistic through the Skype Journal, although he also noted that “Skype doubled its headcount this year, hiring 298 people since 1 January.” Some people feel that, taken together, those numbers are evidence of eBay’s slow assimilation of the company.

Om Malik used the term “ebay-i-zation,” which seems appropriate. He also noted that the reorganization, which will see marketing functions from other countries return to England, “included axing of the entire business development part of the company, barring a handful of country heads.”

But whenever “country heads” start rolling – even if a few of them remain in place – it’s time to take note.

Not everyone’s alarmed by the move, however. Russell Shaw wrote, “I’m never (OK, seldom) happy when people lose their jobs. But given the fact that Skype is a multinational colossus that seems to have great difficulty articulating a marketing message beyond just how inexpensive and cool they are, I hold out hope that consolidation will help message organization and coordination.”

Beyond the folks “who have yet to find another job,” Phil Wolff reported that “about 40 of the 516 people working at Skype worldwide are affected, 26 of those shifting roles or locations.”
