Shoppers Look To Black Friday Sites For Deals

People who are planning to shop on the day after Thanksgiving or Black Friday are looking online at Black Friday Web sites that feature advanced copies of retailer’s discounts.

Those who will shop on Black Friday will spend more than the average consumer. The average spend on the day after Thanksgiving will be $790 this year, according to Maritz Research. That compares with $637 for all consumers.

“It’s no secret that Black Friday shoppers are looking for discounts, and retailers have already started slashing prices – earlier than ever before,” said Gloria Park Bartolone, vice president, Maritz Research’s Retail Group.

“If retailers can hit the mark with discounts that appeal to Gen X, Gen Y and those with larger household incomes, they might be able to capture more of the larger spend Black Friday shoppers are planning to make. That could make for a better start to what might be a ‘blue’ Christmas for retailers.”

Black Friday sites did well last year. The most popular site Black Friday Ads had a 44 percent market share of visitor traffic for the week ending November 25, 2006, according to Hitwise. Other sites that did well include BlackFriday.info, which had a 23 percent share, and Black Friday@GottaDeal with a 17 percent share.

The amount of Internet searches for the term “Black Friday” increased 348 percent, when compared to the four weeks ending November 25,2006 to the four weeks ending November 26,2005.
