The functionality and rich content delivered in the new web console really provides the anywhere access to the information operations teams need to keep systems running. Here are 3 reasons you’ll find the new web console a must-have. I’ll include some screenshots as reference at the end of this article.
Expanded Functionality
Can you say “maintenance mode”? The new console offers much richer content than that available in the MOM 2005 Web console, include active alerts, server and application state, topology diagrams and performance views. Alert views available also include the state of all synthetic transactions, distributed applications and agentless exception monitoring. You’ll also find the ‘My Workspace’ views and searches accessible via the web console.
RSS
Unlike the less than stellar summary feed that came in the MOM 2005 RSS add-on, the syndication feed in MOMv3 delivers detailed alerts from the last 24 hours by default (settings can be adjusted in the web.config file), allowing management outside your bulging inbox through RSS readers and web-based RSS services.
The feed is accessible at http:///rss/.
Mobility
And in a story paralleling that of the RSS feed, the SCOM 2007 Mobile Web Console interface offers a summary view of active alerts by severity with drill down to detailed alerts of the last 24 hours on your mobile phone. Great when you’re out slacking off on a long lunch with a vendor J.
The mobile web console is accessible via http:///mobile/
Conclusion:
As you can see, the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Web Console (say that 3 times fast!) is a quantum leap ahead of it’s ugly-duckling predecessor, and should prove a valuable ally to the administrator who likes to leave office every now and again.
