Promptu Gives Mobile A Voice In Search

Voice-activated search and navigation company, Promptu, recently released a technology for voice search on mobile phones, allowing wireless subscribers seek out and purchase available content by speaking.

Formerly known as cable TV search company AgileTv, Promptu’s service is server-side, rather than client side. Often with voice-activated embedded solutions, where phones have to be trained to recognize a user’s voice, Promptu keeps a database of over 100,000 phrases on its own server.

Promptu provides mobile subscribers access to the content offered by their wireless carrier like music, videos, and ringtones, voice-searchable by title, personality, brand, or genre. For example, a user can use a voice command like “Find Coldplay” or “Find ESPN” to return results.

“Why not simply empower subscribers to ask for what they want? Voice is the natural solution to mobile’s navigational and interface constraints,” said Paul Cook, chairman and CEO, Promptu.

“The current method of countless clicks and scrolls to search and buy mobile content can be a frustrating experience for users, and too many abandon their searches altogether,” said Brady O. Bruce, senior vice president of

Telecom Products and Services at Promptu. “With Promptu’s voice-controlled search, subscribers can find content within a few seconds.”

The company sites a study conducted by research firm Greenfield Online, who found that 75 percent of those in the study group said the availability of voice-enabled search would affect their choice of carrier. Sixty-three percent said they would buy more mobile downloads with Promptu; and 80 percent said they were interested or very interested in having Promptu on their mobile phone.
