Over A Million Delicious Users Served

Del.icio.us, the bookmarking service purchased by Yahoo, has registered over one million users of the service now.

Yahoo’s Jeremy Zawodny posted the Delicious news to the Yahoo Search blog about the social bookmark site. He noted the seven-digit number of registered users was more than triple its membership when Yahoo acquired Delicious in December 2005.

Joshua Schachter, the creator of Delicious, also noted the occasion on the site’s blog:

We can hardly believe it ourselves (although the smell of smoke coming from the server rack seems to eerily confirm it). Thanks to each and every one of you for making all this possible.
Delicious has been a fixture for those million users, due to its clean design, effective functionality, and utilitarian approach to a problem that merited such a straightforward solution. Tagging and adding a site to one’s Delicious account could not be an easier task.

Along with other Yahoo acquisitions like Flickr and Upcoming.org, Delicious represents part of Yahoo’s construction of a foundation in social media. This work has been credited by the Gartner analyst firm as central to the company’s strategies:

The most important trend to watch is the rise of social media, which positions Yahoo at the leading edge of usage with sites like Flickr (photo sharing), del.icio.us (social bookmarking) and Yahoo Answers. As the trend continues, Yahoo can be expected to make strategic acquisitions to add to its portfolio of services.
