Online Movies Growing ?

Watching videos online is popular for sure. The online video market has exploded in the last year with sites like YouTube leading the way. It may come as a surprise that there is one area of online video that has not seen rapid growth.

According to the “Broadband Video and Web Television End-User Perceptions” report from ABI Research only a small number of North Americans have either rented or purchased a digital movie download. Those that have make up only 5 percent of video online viewers. That number is lower than those who say the have downloaded movies for free from peer -to-peer sharing sites.

Movie downloads both legal and illegal are the least watched category of online videos on the Internet. 70 percent of users who watch online video still is attracted to the shorter content clips.

“The vast majority of those watching content online are watching short-form content,” said Michael Wolf of ABI. “Older users in particular watch primarily news and sports, while younger users are watching more entertainment content, including viral media provided by sites such as YouTube.”

When ABI asked consumers why they did not watch downloaded movies from the Internet most users said the main reason was they were comfortable with the existing technology such as cable and DVD’s.

If the numbers are correct than this should be some relief to Hollywood and their concern over piracy. Then again 5 percent, though small is probably too big of a piece of the pie for Hollywood to be comfortable with.
