One-Click Websites from Google

Yet another new service from Google, this one aimed at anyone who wants to create a web page (not a blog) with the minimum of fuss and absolutely no exposure to anything techie:

We’re testing a new product that makes creating your own web pages as easy as creating a document in a word processor. Google Page Creator is a free tool that lets you create web pages right in your browser and publish them to the web with one click. There’s no software to download and no web designer to hire. The pages you create are hosted on Google servers and are available at http://yourgmailusername.googlepages.com for the world to see.

Search Engine Watch has the lowdown including commentary from Google on what prompted this new service. More opinions aggregated at Tech Memeorandum.

It is very easy indeed. I quickly created a page in less than five minutes (see that little effort here) and I can imagine that no one will have any trouble with this at all.

Google says it’s not designed to compete with Blogger, its free blog hosting service, says SEW:

[] What’s the difference between Google Page Creator and Blogger, the free blog publishing and hosting service also owned by Google? [Google product manager Justin] Rosenstein says that Google Page Creator is aimed at people who are interested in publishing a simple, relatively static web site, whereas Blogger is designed for people who want to post frequently, with regularly changing content.

So who will use this service? Some initial thoughts about Google Page Creator in today’s edition of FIR: The Hobson & Holtz Report podcast.
