MySpace Rumor Mill

Perhaps it’s the sudden memetic success of MySpace that has everyone around taking shots at its founders. Or perhaps it’s the sudden multimillion-dollar success of the site that has turned its founders into seedy party boys with shady associations. Only a few seem to know for sure, but it’s fun to wonder.

The fun rumor is one pounded on by Silicon Valley gossip mag, Valleywag. According to them, MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson has not only a penchant for Asian girls, but has a double-secret private MySpace profile reserved just for picking them up

And then there’s

The Asian girl parties in Miami

The alleged roots in Asian porn

We could contact News Corp. and ask about this, but that would ruin the fun of rumors, now wouldn’t it? Besides, I can imagine their answer:

“I am not at liberty to discuss whether or not Mr. Anderson has a proclivity for women of Asian descent. You should be ashamed of yourself for asking,” said the imaginary spokesperson.

The other rumor is juicier and darker and would probably yield less response – or much like the response we got here.

Journalism student Trent Lapinski, who’s made an early investigative career of trying to out the shady pasts of MySpace’s founders, says the real brains behind the website was sitting in prison for his involvement in a banking scandal when Intermix was sold to News Corp.

Check out Trent’s blog for the juicy details.
