Myspace Donates Sex Offender Database

MySpace.com partnered with Sentinel Tech that they are donating a Sentinel Safe database to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). The database, jointly developed by MySpace and Sentinel, enables websites identify, remove, and block convicted sex offenders from online communities.

NCMEC plans to use the database as an analytical tool to assist federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in their investigations.

“We believe it’s an extremely useful law enforcement tool and want to see it used as broadly as possible,” said Hemanshu Nigam, Chief Security Officer, Fox Interactive Media, parent company of MySpace.

Ernie Allen, president and CEO of NCMEC, said the donation would help the organization keep the Internet safer by tracking those that commit crimes against children.

MySpace and Sentinel began work on the national, searchable sex offender database containing information on an estimated 600,000 registered sex offenders in the United States. The database will also be used by federal, state, and local law enforcement for investigating crimes against children.

The database is designed to receive the most current updates from state sex offender registries with new information and identifiers of registered sex offenders.

The donation gives NCMEC access to “the most cutting edge technology available today,” according Seninel CEO John Cardillo. “Sentinel Safe will allow law enforcement, both big and small, the ability to enhance their searches and better track these criminals, making the Internet safer for all,” he said.

The Sentinel Safe database is also being used by MySpace’s own safety team to monitor the online community for convicted sex offenders – though it is unclear how predators operating under assumed names would be identified. The company says that once a positive match is confirmed, the safety team immediately removes any matching profiles on its site.
