Microsoft,Yahoo Among Best Employers

Microsoft and Yahoo scored a place on Fortune Magazines “100 Best Companies To Work For” list for 2006, but the company known for its free meals and volleyball games didn’t make the group.

Dilbert’s smiling face on the cover of a magazine signifies two things: Scott Adams drew Dilbert with a mouth, which he never does in the comics, and the 100 Best Companies to Work For list has arrived. Biotech company Genentech topped the list, but search was represented by virtue of two technology players.

Followers of Mini-Microsoft’s blog may be surprised to see the global tech power at 42 on the list. But Microsoft did finish in the top half of companies, with Fortune citing health care as a big factor:

The software king offers what may be the most generous health-insurance plan in America. The premium is zero, with no deductible. And it’s the first U.S. corporation to pay for therapy for dependents who are autistic.
Yahoo trailed Microsoft, snaring 73rd on the list thanks to its breadth of employee perks:

The dot-com spirit lives at the Internet portal, which makes its debut on our list. Onsite amenities include massage, haircuts, dentistry, car wash, oil change, foosball, bocce, free lattes, and stock options for all.
Lavish perks and a place in high-tech Silicon Valley aren’t enough to make the list. Google, well-known for its kitchens and scores of other benefits designed to keep workers hanging around the Googleplex, didn’t make the list. Nike scored the final spot at number 100.
