The company discussed the use of the .NET Framework, SQL Server, and Visual Studio .NET to enable effective RFID deployment.
Microsoft discussed radio frequency identification at Tech Ed in Orlando today. Senior VP of Server Applications Paul Flessner provided a demonstration during his keynote address.
Unsurprisingly, Microsoft believes it can be the provider of choice for businesses that want to use RFID but think too many factors will prevent deployment.
The company lists complexity of device management, lack of standards, and costly integration with existing applications as barriers to RFID adoption. But the potential for greater cost savings and better management of resources will outweigh those factors.
“Seamless integration of sensor data with applications and business processes through easy-to-use tools at low cost is a big step forward for companies justifying a strategic investment in RFID technologies,” Mr. Flessner said.
“This infrastructure will take full advantage of the .NET Framework and Visual Studio.NET as well as advancements across the Windows Server System family of products. The intent is to reduce the complexity and cost of integrating and managing RFID data in a company.”
Microsoft wants to do for RFID what it has done for other facets of technology. They want to provide it at a competitive price point, and to provide the sort of easily used management tools it does in its other solutions.
If they can make RFID devices plug-and-play within an enterprise while doing so, that’s an added benefit to a business, and one that Microsoft will be able to use as a selling point.
