Microsoft and Baidu have reached a “strategic alliance” in regards to Chinese paid search listings. According to an official statement, “Microsoft will display Baidu’s paid search listings on the search results pages of certain Microsoft websites, including MSN, Live, and other partner websites in China.”
David Zhu, the COO of Baidu, also made a statement, and his comments extended nicely from Johnson’s. “Baidu’s partnership with Microsoft recognizes the huge potential and rate of growth of the Chinese online search market,” said Zhu. “We are delighted to share our rich business experience and channel resources with our partners and contribute to the overall development of the Chinese search market.”
The Chinese search market is, in some ways, starting to resemble the American one. Google and Yahoo are both present in various forms, and they’re battling it out there much as they have here. (They’ve earned criticism for their willingness to cooperate with the Chinese government in their endeavors, as well.)
Baidu is the clear leader in the Chinese search market, however, and Microsoft is undoubtedly patting itself on the back for securing such a powerful ally. The Shanghai Daily reports that “in terms of page views, Baidu has a market share of 63.7 percent, far ahead of Google’s 19.2 percent and Yahoo’s 7.6 percent in the Chinese market.”
