Listen To Mamma, You’ll Get There

The popular meta-search engine Mamma.com has added the search capabilities provided by SLI Systems’ Related Search technology that automatically suggests ways to refine your queries by “learning from search behavior.”

If you’re dense enough to ask [what was the name of that chick in that movie with the guy from Taxi?], you may confuse it. But if you need some more information about [Kathleen Turner], Related Search can help.

The tool suggests alternative search phrases, allowing additional searches by clicking on the suggestions. Suggestions are generated by SLI Systems’ search technology that constructs relationships between searches by learning from search behavior.

The related search suggestions are customized for each site to reflect variations such as the geographic location of visitors, revenue optimization, or adult filtering.

Of course, doofus behavior it’s not really prepared before. The aforementioned search query [what was the name of that chick in that movie with the guy from Taxi?] brought back a blank stare from the revise search column-as it should.

It was impressive though, that Mamma.com got me there, in as a round about manner as the query. I found my answer on Page 2, on this weird movie review of “Romancing the Stone.”

Ten Thousand Monkeys (where I found Kathleen Turner), though, played second fiddle to “Chronicles of a Sexy Fat Chick,” who is a self-described fat, female Spiderman.

Searches for [Kathleen Turner] and something more likely, [ipod], successfully brought back potentially useful suggestions. Looks like it works pretty well.

Mamma.com chose SLI Systems’ tool for its customizable search functionality and specifically for its ability to increase the success rate of user searches. The meta-search engine says Related Search generated an additional 10% increase in October in search activities.

“We’re very pleased with the increased level of search coming from Related Search,” said Guy Faure, president and CEO of Mamma.com Inc. “As we grow Mamma.com’s metasearch capabilities, companies like SLI Systems provide our site with enhanced technical value.”

And nice work finding an answer to a stupid query, too.
