Java VM and Windows 98

Dear Carey,

Hi, I lost all java on my win 98se machine .I’ve done everything short of reinstalling the OS. I reinstalled MS java VM Did not work. So I tried Suns Java, installed it And it still does not work. I uninstalled it then reinstalled it still nothing did this 8 times. I consulted with sun about 4 times, and they told me to do everything I had already done all 8 times i reinstalled it.

I see this in the upper left corner of the applet , thats It…every web page with java does not work Not a single one. But when I open a dos prompt and type jview this is what it says, below in red. I don’t know exactly what it means , but this is the version of MS I have. Suns ver. Is the newest. I also have suns java set to be default jvm all settings are set. I know my way around windows pretty well but this is driving me crazy. Even suns java says it was instelled correctly. Also I went into the registry To see what the java strings had to say this is where I went and what I saw. I went to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE /software/ microsoft/java vm/system properties this is what I saw Com.ms.applet.ena”false” Is that right? Do you think you could help me?oh I do not receive any error messages what so ever. Its like java is there but the applet will not load

Im runnung Windows 98 SE , Internet explorer 6 sp1, celeron 400, Its old I Know, and 160megs of RAM.

Thank You

Mike

Hi Mike,
If you have any firewalls installed, disable them and see if that fixes the problem. If you have any pop-up stopper software installed, disable it and see if that fixes the problem. If you have any anti-virus software installed, disable it and see if that fixes the problem.

If not, open the Control Panel and double-click on Internet Options.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the Security tab, click the Internet Web content zone, and then click Custom Level.
  2. In the Settings box, scroll down to the Scripting section, and click ENABLE under Active scripting and Scripting of Java applets.
  3. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  4. NOTE: In Internet Explorer, the term “Active scripting” or “ActiveX scripting” refers to both Microsoft JScript scripting and Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition. When you complete this procedure, you enable both types of scripts.

  5. click the Internet Web content zone, and then click Custom Level.
  6. In the Settings box, click ENABLE under Download signed ActiveX controls, Download unsigned ActiveX controls, Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe, Run ActiveX controls and plugins, and Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.
  7. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  8. Verify that Internet Explorer’s internal Java Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler is disabled:
  9. Click the Advanced tab, and then place a check in the box (if one is not already there) to enable the JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart) check box under Java VM.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Click the Security tab, click the Internet Web content zone, and then click Custom Level.
  12. In the Settings box, make sure Disable Java under Java Permissions are properly enabled, click OK and then click OK again.

If all else fails, download and run WinPatrol from www.winpatrol.com to remove unnecessary items from starting when your computer starts. Also, download and run Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com and scan and remove any and all spyware found on your PC.

You can learn more about Spyware on my previous article at https://murdok.org/Murdok-22-20030610RemovingSpyware.html
Hope this helps, (and if it does, please let me know which solution worked).

Thanks,

Carey
