Intel Introduces 64-Bit Truland Xeon Processor Family

Continuing a concerted effort to bring 64-bit microprocessing to its entire processing family, Intel today introduced their 64-bit Truland Xeon multiprocessor (MP) platform.

According to Intel, the Truland Xeon MP family is targeted toward the mid-tier enterprise market segment. The 64-bit Truland platform consists of five new processors for servers needing four or more processors in order to function. As indicated, Intel refers to the new line as a multiprocessor, meaning the Truland line was designed to support Intel’s dual-core processing technology.

Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group, offered these thoughts, “Over the past 10 years, Intel has helped to fundamentally change the mid-tier server market segment from expensive, proprietary machines, to affordable, powerful and innovative servers based on standards. Intel has played a leading role in delivering leading edge performance and innovation at superior value.”

Intel’s release reveals Truland marks the first time any Intel MP server platform has combined Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology, PCI Express, DDR2-400 Memory and Demand Based Switching with Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology. The idea behind including the Truland chipset “features” is to increase server performance and improve reliability.

Andy Lees, corporate vice president of Server and Tools Marketing and Solutions for Microsoft is understandably pleased with Intel’s Truland line. This much was indicated by Lees comments, which said, “Working with companies such as Intel, Microsoft is committed to enabling customers with the best price/performance software platform in the industry, leveraging innovations such as the new Intel Xeon processor MP and dual-core technology.”

Lees also reveals the goals of the Intel’s new line by saying, “This is part of our work with Intel to deliver the largest portfolio of 64-bit offerings across a broad spectrum of hardware – from the desktop up to enterprise servers.”

The following is list of prices for the Truland family:
