Last week, it was reported AMD would be releasing their dual-core processing technology featured in enterprise-level machines later this month (April 21). Chief competitor Intel has not taken this news lying down.
In fact, they’ve also announced consumers can expect to see their version of dual-core chips and chipsets to manufacturers. Systems with Intel’s “Extreme Edition” dual-core chips should be appearing this month, which is the same window AMD is looking at.
According to News.com:
A source at Intel narrowed that down further, stating computers containing the chips would hit in April. A Dell spokesman stated that the Round Rock, Texas-based PC maker would start shipping a high-end consumer desktop and a workstation with the dual-core chips “in the coming weeks…”
Pride, more than money or market share, is on the line in the race to deliver a dual-core chip for the so-called x86 market. Both companies have only recently begun production on dual-core chips, so volumes are low. Demand for dual-core chips is likely highest in the server and workstation markets; however, these customers usually rigorously test new chips for weeks or months before buying them, so sales won’t take off rapidly with the release of the chips.
The article goes on to reveal statistics from Intel’s upcoming dual-core chipset. The Extreme Edition Pentium 4 will run at 3.2 GHz, which is slower than existing Pentium 4s. However, because of the dual-core architecture, Intel believes the new Pentium 4s will be able to handle multi-tasking much better than existing processors.
