Actually, it’s called “Delete Browsing History,” but why not call it like it is? Microsoft certainly seems to have watched and learned from open source innovative browsers like Opera and Firefox. The latest hey-that-was-a-good-idea incarnation of Internet Explorer will include the history flush function for IE 7.
And let’s face it, those uninfected with geekitis will follow the herd from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 7 once released, having never heard of the alternatives. IE 6 still runs on nearly 90% of personal computers.
Program manager Uche Enuha gives a sanitized version of why the average user would benefit from the new offering on the IE Developer Center.
“So you’re trying to buy a gift for your loved one and you know how important it is to keep this mission secret. You’re aware of every site you visit but your machine is aware of even more; the stuff you type, the information you read, even the cookies requested by the site where you eventually buy the gift. You realize how important it is that your loved one never gets hold of any of this information. So you do what we all would, you try and cover your tracks. Now back in IE6, you would have to spend a lot of time looking through various places on your computer to get rid of all the relevant information and possibly still miss some critical information. Now with the Delete Browsing History’ feature, we are giving every person the ability to clear all their browsing information from one location with a click of a button and, the peace of mind that the job was done right.”
Aww, that’s sweet. She also won’t be surprised by the auto-complete when a search for [pie recipes] changes into [pin-up girls].
The feature allows deletion of files altogether or by category. The five categories include: Temporary Internet Files; Cookies; History; Form Data; and Passwords. Within the categories, users can choose more precisely what they want deleted from their history.
