IBM Sues Amazon

IBM has filed two lawsuits against Amazon.com for violating a number of its patents, all of which seem to involve the basis of Amazon’s operation.

IBM announced on its site this morning that the lawsuits were launched after nearly four years of trying to collect compensation for Amazon’s use of its patents. According to IBM the company has informed Amazon.com numerous times of the alleged infringement, but Amazon took no steps to rectify the matter. Said Dr. John E. Kelly III, senior vice president of IBM Technology and Intellectual Property:

“We filed this case for a very simple reason. IBM’s property is being knowingly and unfairly exploited.”

IBM has claimed more patents in the US than any company over the past 13 years. The suit against Amazon alleges infringement over a number of those patents, including:

  • US 5,796,967 – Presenting Applications in an Interactive Service.
  • US 5,442,771 – Storing Data in an Interactive Network.
  • US 7,072,849 – Presenting Advertising in an Interactive Service.
  • US 5,446,891 – Adjusting Hypertext Links with Weighted User Goals and Activities.
  • US 5,319,542 – Ordering Items Using an Electronic Catalogue.
  • Amazon has yet to comment on the lawsuit. Added Kelly, When someone takes our property, without our permission through a license, we have no option but to protect it through every means available to us.
