There are things you just can’t sell on eBay. You can’t sell live animals, body parts, or your immortal soul. And as some unscrupulous entrepreneurs will learn if captured, you can’t sell babies, either.
Shanghai police are hunting down a person by the name of Chuangxinzhe Yongyuan (forever innovator) after placing babies-for-sale ads on eBay’s Chinese leg, Eachnet. The ad offered baby boys for about $3,500, and baby girls for a pittance $1,600.
The ad, placed on October 16th, said the aim of the company was to help China’s childless experience the joy of parenthood.
“Our aim is to send good news to the thousands of couples around the country who are unable to have children,” says the Shanghai Morning Post about the content of the ad.
Fifty people viewed the advertisement before it was taken down by Eachnet. A spokesperson for Eachnet told Reuters the keyword “baby” had slipped past site filters because of the abundance of baby products listed.
Under Chinese law, selling babies can carry the death penalty. Those buying also face prosecution.
