After an obsessively covered keynote address by Google co-founder Larry Page, Google unveiled its one-stop software offering, Google Pack; shortly thereafter, one piece of software vanished from the download page.
Whither Google Video Player?
The case of the disappearing video player at least promises to be more interesting than the keynote address Page delivered at CES 2006 in Las Vegas. Page’s speech “leaked” to the excellent reporting team of Kevin Delaney and Nick Wingfield from the Wall Street Journal, so anyone who followed that story knew what was coming well ahead of the keynote.
One part of the keynote formally announced the Google Pack, an assortment of software packages for Windows computer users. The Pack includes a variety of Google and third-party utilities; one of the included pieces of Google software was its Video Player.
Coupled with the new Google Video marketplace, the Player would serve as the front end for premium content from CBS, recent NBA games, and other offerings. However, the Video Player has been removed from the list of downloadable software; it’s also not listed with the statement from Google about the Pack’s release.
Gary Price at SEW listed a link to a site containing a screenshot of the Video Player among the Pack’s packages. Likewise, a link to the Video Player’s page returns only a lonely 404 message.
