The experimental Internet browsing center set up and staffed by Google at London’s Heathrow Airport could be an experiment repeated elsewhere.
In the latest episode of the Official Google Blog, Googler Andy Ku posted about Google Space. The free Internet access gives Google a chance to ask users about the company’s products, and get some personal feedback.
Ku called it “Google Labs goes material.” It makes use of the time people have between arriving early for a flight to account for enhanced security procedures and waiting around for the flight to open for boarding and departure. Several services like Gmail and Google Local have received extra attention from Google Space users.
On the Google Space site, users from anywhere can provide feedback to Google on the services available. Ku mentioned another item they could suggest to Google there, too:
If people find Google Space useful, we might do this in other areas, or perhaps in other airports. Who knows? Let us know where you waste time – and you might see us there.
Maybe Google can figure out a way to get into supermarkets, where four cashiers staff checkout lanes while the other 16 are closed and customer lines snake through the frozen foods section to the back of the store. It’s almost as captive an audience as those at the airport.
