The universal binary provided by Google for the Mac version of its video player means it will run on both the PowerPC and Intel-based Mac computers.
Google’s Video team invited the Mac faithful to give Google’s most recent product release a try.
The Video Player for Mac plays Google Videos and opens the market for its premium content to Mac users. That content includes shows from CBS like “CSI” and NBA playoff games.
Plenty of user contributed content also resides on Google Video and is freely available for viewing. Google displays its popular and featured videos at the Google Video page.
Video has become a battleground for the big Internet players like Google and Yahoo. Both have watched as YouTube has swept into a dominant position as a provider of online video.
Yahoo recently updated its video service to allow users to upload content, in a competitive response to YouTube and Google.
A proliferation of camera phones, web cams, and digital editing software has taken video out of the studio and placed it at the hands of people everywhere. Given the tools to make videos, millions of people seem to have done so and uploaded their efforts online.
Now the video sharing and search market needs to find its business model. Yahoo has an advantage with its profitable brand advertising, but they and other video providers will have to assure advertisers their ads won’t appear alongside videos that could cast their products or services in a negative light.
